If I were to guess, it’d be that wretched medallion, which brought so much grief to the kingdom. Personally, I wouldn’t want it anywhere near me, since someone might find it and the terror might begin anew. So just pass it on to a group of travelers and never see it again.
Furthermore, they came into the kingdom to look for what’s marked on that map…which is, without a doubt, the medallion. And Sasha seems to be impervious to it anyway. Probably because she’s pure hearted or some jazz like that.
But yeah, now since the stress has let off, it’s as good a time as any to worry about their wayward comrades 😛
To be honest, I wish there was some type of closure to what is going to happen to that kingdom. I don’t think time and patience would be enough for the kingdom to recover. Even though the king was possessed, he caused many innocent people to die, and his people suffered great economic strain. I think that the people would need physical proof that he was possessed. This is an example that could happen, after Sasha and the others left the kingdom:
The Queen tells her distraught husband what he has been doing. Greatly saddened, the King is pained for all the suffering he has done and for killing his own brother. He is considering sending himself to be hung, to pay for what he has done. Suddenly, the King screams out in pain. Guards rush in to see what is going on. A black, murky fog stats to billow out of the King’s mouth. It soon forms an amorphous cloud over the kings body (who is at this point collapsed into a fevered sleep). The guards and the queen are frozen in shock as to what they are seeing. The murky cloud suddenly lunges towards the Queen. A quick thinking guard shoots an arrow at this monstrosity. It falls lifelessly to the floor. The guards cautiously surround it. The fog surrounding the creature fades away, revealing a hideous beast. The Queen, still badly shook up, requests the guards to call for a doctor and to tie up and remove the foul creature. Several days later, the King awakens, feeling confused and quite weak. In his room, he sees several people (his wife, the doctor, the appointed historian), and they all look concerned. The King asked what happened, and the Queen told him of the evil creature that poured out of his body and tried to attack her. She also tells him that they called for the historian to see if he could find out what exactly the creature was. Reading through numerous books, the historian found out the creature is called a shadow beast, and they are attracted to objects with powerful magic. Shadow beasts are quite weak and need a host to handle magic. The historian interjects and says that shadow beasts are very aggressive and will kill anyone that they feel will take their power away from them. Also, they thrive on misery, and cause chaos, when they can. Even though the King acknowledges that this appears to have happened to him, he still feels strong guilt for all the pain he has caused. The Queen gently takes the King’s hand, and tells him that she will support this burden with him and will stand by his side, when he is well enough to tell the people the reason for his cruel behavior. When the King is well enough, he calls for a meeting in the center of town. The shadow beast is tightly shackled to a large stake, next to the King. The sight of the hideous creature brings quite a shock to the people, and many people nervously whisper as to what is going on. The King explains to the people that this foul beast possessed him, while on his pilgrimage, and caused him to viciously murder his own brother, kill his most trusted men, and to bring great suffering to his family and to the people. Tearfully, the King tells everyone the pain and guilt he feels for what has happened, and he wishes none of it happened. He asks for their forgiveness and promises them that he will pay everyone for their hardships they endured and will rebuild the city and bring back peace to the kingdom. The King also said that he will give the choice to the people to decide if he should be hung for what has happened (if they decide to not forgive him). Nervous chatter fills the crowd, many not knowing what to do. Some say they forgive the king, while others are unsure (they think it might be a ruse) and wonder if the beast is actually real. In what seemed like an answer to that question, the shadow beast lets out a gurgled shriek and tries to break free. With great speed, the king takes out his sword and slices the beast’s head off. It’s blood resembles a murky, black liquid and bubbles, when it falls to the ground. Convinced that the king is now telling the truth, the crowd rallies for the King. The shadow beast is burned, as a sign of a new beginning. There could be scenes of where the king, and his family, are happily helping the people and fixing up the kingdom.
I know it’s long (and not really put well together), but I think there should be a page or two showing what will happen to the kingdom. (I’m not criticizing your comic, I enjoy reading it and can’t wait for more updates. I also saw your paintings, and they are quite beautiful 🙂 )
Wow! That’s awesome! <3 <3
I'm glad you like the comic! We will revisit the King and Queen, because I thought, as you did, that it really couldn't just be left like that, but I have something slightly more sinister planned...
Hmm…that’s quite an elaborate tale…
There’s one little problem with your tale, however.
The king collapsed immediately once the medallion was removed. If he was possessed by a different entity, it would attack Sasha and reclaim the medallion immediately.
That’s also why I figured, that the vile spirit was tied TO the medallion. Once the item is removed, the link to the spirit within is severed as well.
That would imply, that the Medallion(s) do serve as prisons for powerful magical beasts, which could not be killed (I mean, why else would you create such items?). I can also imagine, that their power was being used as a sort of ‘generator’…as in their life force is being sapped by some sort of mechanism to sustain some sort of function. As an example, said energy could be responsible to keep the water of the river pure.
It rejected Sasha touching its prison, because of her pure heart or maybe because she’s under some sort of protection spell.
If one of the others had actually touched the medallion, they would probably have gotten possessed as well and gone all Gollum on the others though 😛
Shadow beast, eh? That reminds me of the story I wrote some 12 years ago now…right, not the place 😛
Regarding as to what happens to the people and what they are to think, I don’t think the Doppelganger-theory is that bad. That way, the people could be told, that the impostor has now been gotten rid of and that the rightful king is now back to repair the damage, starting with giving his trusted men and his brother a proper burial service.
Personally, I’d prefer if she was immune because of the other medallion, not pure of heart or something. Also interesting connection with Gollum, when you consider how the king got it in the first place…

We’ll be finding out more about what the deal is with medallions in the next few chapters, but that’s not what’s in the box. (good guess though :P)
