I suggest a well-spun half-truth. It’s a world where magic exists, right? (Who am I kidding, of course it does). How about a shapeshifter or a malevolent relative, who got his hands on a shapeshifting potion slaughtered the king’s escort and took the king himself prisoner (because the shapeshifting doesn’t work, if the original is dead and the original gets to witness the acts of the Doppelganger as if it was a dream). It then returned in the king’s stead, tricking everyone until a group of valiant knights set out to find out what exactly happened to their king. They found the real king and once the magic seals he was under got released, the shapeshifter lost his form and was arrested (and executed) on the spot, making room for the real king to return.
That way, it wasn’t the king who did all those gruesome things, even though he did look like him.
I mean, possession is also a good excuse to the people, but he would never forgive himself, if the king learned that he had been possessed and committed all those gruesome things himself.
As for why he woke up in his bed chambers is easily explained as well. They took the king back to the castle, heavily fatigued from the imprisonment and laid him to rest. When he woke up again, everything was over already.
