If these guys were thinking of robbing them, the easiest way would have been to simply charge them for getting them out of the hole (which would have been closer to extortion, but oh well).
Or if they were going to rob them they would have just left them in the hole and took all their stuff. They didn’t have to get them out or be nice to them in any way.
