Don't ask me why the bear has an eyepatch - it's just one of those things. I imagine this bear is quite old and distinguished and has really been through alot.

One perfectly fine explanation as to why the bear has an eyepatch, coming right up:
*Ahem*, I imagine that what the people perceive as ‘bear’ is actually a really tall person with quite a beard, wearing a fur hide for clothing. He has a very loud personality and doesn’t like people, so he scares them before they can realize that it’s actually a person, not a bear.
The eyepatch comes from him having lost an eye somewhere during his life. (Pair darkness with fear and mistaking a tall person for a bear is perfectly reasonable.)
Second option: The bear had or has a human friend, who is taking care of him. After the bear lost his eye during an incident with another predator (or a hunter), his friend supplied him with the eyepatch, so the damage won’t get worse.
Pick what you like or discard both 🙂
