Why would anyone want to do that? Okay, counter-question, why do people join terrorist organizations, knowing full well that they’re only end up as cannon fodder?
The only reason behind actions like that is: They’re looking for a master to serve. Someone or something to give their life (and subsequently death) a purpose of some sort, no matter how twisted it may seem. Probably they are fed up with all that’s wrong with the world and seek ways to make them right. (Unfortunately these ways tend to make things worse instead.)
So yeah…there’s basically three options here.
1. He thinks he can control the demon and rule the world with it.
2. He’s possessed by the demon (or a fragment of him) and is manipulated into releasing the full thing.
3. He’s looking for a master to serve, hoping for a reward like immortality or something the likes.
Regarding the destroying…now, if that was so easy, wouldn’t the wizards of old have done so a long time ago? Or much rather, wouldn’t ‘destroying them’ release the demon into the world? (Seeing how they’re sealing artifacts and all).
Hiding…that sounds like a plan…problem is, that these things are radiating power like mad. And an apt wizard will be able to find them, no matter where they are.
So yeah…there’s really only two options for them here…and that is to either find a way to banish the demon for good (making the medallions useless) or to stop the wizard from pursuing them. Ultimately by killing him.

Oh you! XD
Yes? Is something the matter?
4. He lost someone and thinks it doesn’t matter what happens with the world, just if he will have his revenge.
